Diabetic Eye Examinations

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in The United States.  It is important that diabetics get their eyes checked yearly along with dilation.  They might get checked more frequently based on blood sugar control or level of retinopathy.  Retinopathy is any bleeding or other diabetic complications effecting the tissue of the eye called the retina.  The retina is the "seeing" part of the eye and is comparable to film in a camera.  The biggest take home message is that if bleeding is occurring in the eye then it is also occurring in other organs such as the brain, lungs etc.  So the eyes can be a barometer of blood sugar control. 

Dr. Paist believes in the continuity of care and will correspond a letter to the patient's internist regarding the findings of the eye exam.
